The rural surroundings still preserve the essence of the traditional Minorcan landscape. The country houses appear from amongst an authentic maze of parets seques (dry stone walls, built with incredible expertise without any type of mortar) which separate the fincas one from another. These houses present several peculiarities which make them unique, such as the orientation of the roof which is predominantly in the east-west direction, or the widespread custom of the owners to whitewash them, giving them an overall idyllic beauty. Within these groups of houses the llocs, or noble country estates, are outstanding for their dimensions and for their special architectural forms.
Around Sant Lluís there is the possibility of taking walking routes that reach the sea. In perfect harmony with nature is the autochthonous vegetation of the island that you will observe as you proceed on the path, as well as the plodding walk of the Minorcan cows and the presence of a talaiot (prehistoric stone constructions) whose elevation gives you the opportunity of enjoying wonderful views over Sant Lluís.
Not to be missed:
Binibeca Beach is one of those places that few fail to visit, with several urbanisations nearby causing a rise in the number of visitors over the traditional Minorcans, but which has however not been taken over by cement. The beach is very deep with fine sand and behind there is a small pine wood, ideal for taking a break from the sun when it becomes too intense. There is an open-air cafe which may be one of the first of a fixed type on the beaches of the island and which still retains the look of a small, old fishing hut, giving a picture postcard image to the beach. Here you can eat whilst taking in some of the best views of the bay and beach under its cane roof and at sturdy log tables.
The Pueblo de Binibeca is a place you simply must visit in this area. The town of Binibeca is recommended after visiting the beach and when dusk starts setting in. Take a peaceful stroll and enjoy the oasis of tranquillity amongst the white, higgledy-piggledy houses, which have been built like in children's fairy tales on the ancient fishing village next to the small quay and shops. You can also enjoy the restaurant and leisure facilities in the shopping district which, furthermore, is a place with lots of wood on the balconies and floors and just calls out for you to take yet another walk. In Binibeca there are a large number of hotel places and more accommodation from apartments and chalets directed at seasonal tourism.
To the left of the beach at Binibeca, 500 metres away, there is a country house called Cala Torret with a scuba diving centre. Maybe this is a good time to take a plunge or do a course. There is also a jetty and crane. In the Plaza de Torret in amongst the apartments there is a range of services including a supermarket, restaurant and souvenir shops, etc.
Biniancolla is a small bay with a jetty which ends on a pebbly beach and is surrounded by a small urbanisation half-way between Binibeca and Punta Prima. In the upper part there is a hotel and next to the jetty a restaurant with a large terrace and views of the bay. Not far from here there are other gastronomic offers that are highly-appreciated by the residents who are in the majority Minorcans. There is very little activity here and it is very peaceful. Most of the services are to be found in the neighbouring urbanisations of larger dimensions.
Binidalí is a small but attractive cove with a fine sandy beach. The bay has an inlet of around 200 metres and at the foot of the cliff it continues to get narrower. There are no services in the cove, but the urbanisation is not far away.
Biniparratx is an inlet in the shape of an \"L\" which flows onto a beach of fine sand around 300 metres from the inlet. It is better protected from the wind than its neighbours but it has no beach services and it is the same distance from the urbanisation of Binidalí as from Cap d'en Font.
Binissafuller is a narrow inlet with a depth of around 200 metres. There is a small beach at the end and it is bordered by the road which passes behind, just where the beach finishes and four metres further up the slope there are various small houses and even one on the very beach.
Here and at Biniparratx there are various bays without sand but with platforms for bathing and to practice water activities. |
