In 1993, Minorca was declared a Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO. This distinction is in recognition of the harmony that the Minorcans, throughout the ages, have lived with their natural surroundings.
The Eden Binibeca is situated on the south coast of the island, in the municipality of Sant Lluis, a former French settlement. The creation of this town of white houses and of a linear layout occurred during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). Originally it was constructed to house the French troops, as well as to form an organisational centre for the highly populated rural surroundings.
The church in neoclassical style, dedicated to King Luis IX, is of great architectural beauty and its integration with the houses in the town is surprising.
Visiting Sant Lluís opens our eyes to the simplicity, to the genuine beauty of things. This is something seen in the Molí de Dalt, the representative image of the town, an old wheat mill converted nowadays into an ethnological museum.
Popular traditions are still very much alive in the town, and here the game of Joc de Bolla still survives. It is a similar game to pétanque which was very widespread in former times in Minorca, and which is played in the games room at the Sant Lluís Cultural Centre.
During the summer months, there are numerous artistic displays. You can easily find some concert or theatre play on in the town. There is also a market for buying and selling works of art, where local artists exhibit their ceramics and pictures.
The popular fiestas are held during the summer in the different towns on the island. These local celebrations are the best demonstration of genuine Minorcan customs. The starting point of these fiestas in held in Ciutadella on 23rd and 24th June, and is the most popular. When the fiestas of Sant Joan arrive, looked forward to during the whole year, the entire town is united with a strong feeling of tradition, and bounds with joy. These are authentic fiestas in the broadest sense of the word: an ancient protocol marks each moment of the fiesta and its spirit has been passed down from parents to children since the beginning of the Middle Ages. The spectacular nature of the horsemanship games and the explosion in collective elation of the people provoke a genuine contrast of emotions. In Sant Lluis you can enjoy the fiestas on 25th August, which initially were held in honour of Sant Luis IX, King of France. |
