One of the absolute highlights of this area of Majorca is without doubt the S'Albufera, the most extensive and important wet zone in the Balearics. It is a former lagoon separated from the sea by a chain of dunes, which throughout many centuries - but above all during the most recent due to human intervention - has been settling with more and more deposits until becoming an extensive flooded plain. The Natural Park gives protection to around 1,708 hectares of salt marshes and dunes.
The origin of S'Albufera dates back many years (approximately 18 million), but the present wet zone was formed less than 100,000 years ago. The current marine dunes are even more recent - at around 10,000 years of age.
The basis of the ecological wealth of S'Albufera is the water. The circumstance of the almost constant flooding of the greater part of the Natural Park produces the right conditions and favours the growth of the vegetation, which varies according to the depth and proximity to the sea, and the type of land. The various species of plants provide shelter and food to a great many animals, which, in turn, are food to many more. Thanks to the abundance of water, the diversity of living organisms (what the scientists call the biodiversity) is extremely high, making the S'Albufera the grouping of ecosystems with the greatest biodiversity in the whole of the Balearics.
The Playa de Muro is a long expanse of white, fine sand which continues from the Playa de Alcudia right up to Ca'n Picafort. It offers all types of facilities both in accommodation and restaurants and bars (with some of the most modern and luxurious hotels in Majorca), as well as sports and open-air pursuits (canoeing, sailing, cycling, pony trekking and a long etcetera).
Thanks to its gentle gradient and its calm waters, this is one of the safest beaches on the island.
